Senator John Hoeven and Senator Tim Scott have introduced a resolution to condemn antisemitism on U.S. college campuses and university officials who fail to address antisemitic violence targeting Jewish students. In a statement, Senator Hoeven emphasized the need for university officials to protect Jewish students, stating, “University officials must restore order and protect Jewish students on college campuses across the country. Antisemitism cannot be tolerated.”
Senator Scott echoed these sentiments, highlighting the concerning rise of antisemitism on college campuses, “Antisemitism is rearing its ugly head at college campuses across our nation. Jewish students are being targeted with violence and harassment, and the university presidents and administrators, who should be defending them, are caving to the radical mob and allowing chaos to spread.”
The resolution also calls on the Biden administration’s Department of Education to ensure that colleges and universities are complying with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act to safeguard Jewish students. Senator Scott emphasized the importance of holding accountable those who fail to protect the rights of Jewish students, stating, “Every Jewish student has the right to attend class, study, and walk campus safely. The ‘adults’ who refuse to uphold that right must be held accountable.”
Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell and several other Senators have cosponsored the resolution, showing bipartisan support for addressing campus antisemitism. The full text of the resolution can be accessed for further details on the proposed measures.
