On Friday, U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND) and U.S. Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) introduced a resolution in defense of Israel's right to protect itself from terrorist threats. The resolution also condemns any interference in Israel's elections by United States officials.
Senator Cramer emphasized the importance of supporting Israel, stating, "Israel is our closest ally in the middle east and the only sovereign, democratic state in the region. They face perpetual threats from Hamas and other terrorist organizations targeting their very existence." He added, "The Jewish state of Israel has every right to defend itself, and it is wholly inappropriate for the American government to interfere in their elections. Israel is our ally and friend, and our actions and words should reflect this reality."
Senator Scott highlighted the brutal actions of Hamas, stating, "Hamas is the reason the conflict started on October 7th and the reason it continues today. Israel has every right to defend itself from this brutal terrorist organization that raped and murdered innocent civilians and continues to hold more than 100 people hostage – including several American citizens." He affirmed his unwavering support for Israel in its fight against terrorism.
The resolution, known as S. Res. 417, received support from a number of cosponsors, including U.S. Senators Tom Cotton, Josh Hawley, Marco Rubio, and many others. The resolution reaffirms the United States Senate's backing of Israel's right to defend itself and addresses concerns regarding electoral interference in Israel's internal affairs.
The introduction of this resolution comes in response to recent calls for new elections in Israel by Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. The resolution aims to underscore the United States' commitment to standing by Israel in its efforts to combat terrorism and protect its sovereignty.
