Senator John Hoeven recently emphasized the importance of supporting access to baseload power sources, like coal-fired electric, during a hearing of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. Hoeven pressed nominees for the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to prioritize the stability and affordability of the grid by advocating for these power sources. In addressing FERC nominees David Rosner, Lindsay See, and Judy Chang, Hoeven stressed North Dakota's efforts in reducing emissions and securing the future of coal-fired electric.

“This is about securing the future of coal-fired electric and supporting the reliability and affordability of the grid. This priority falls squarely within FERC’s authority, and if confirmed, I appreciate the nominees’ commitment to work with me to ensure the energy security of our nation,” Senator Hoeven stated.

Hoeven has been a driving force in advancing Coal-Based CCUS in North Dakota, aiming to ensure the state's coal industry's future and enhance grid affordability and reliability. His work includes securing substantial federal funding, loan guarantees, and tax credits to support coal-fired CCUS projects. Recently, Minnkota announced significant progress in Project Tundra, a key initiative in coal-based CCUS, with new partnerships and financial support.

Earlier this year, Minnkota announced that Project Tundra entered its final stage of development as new affiliates, including TC Energy, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and Kiewit, were added to build the project. The new partnership is supported by a $350 million grant that Hoeven worked to secure under the Department of Energy’s Carbon Capture Demonstration Projects Program.

In addition to his efforts in promoting coal-based CCUS, Senator Hoeven is actively working on legislation in the U.S. Senate to streamline federal permitting processes and boost domestic energy production. These legislative initiatives are part of a comprehensive permitting reform passed by the U.S. House of Representatives.

Senator Hoeven's advocacy for baseload power sources and coal-fired electric aligns with his long-standing commitment to energy security, affordability, and grid reliability. His dedication to advancing CCUS technologies and streamlining permitting processes underscores his efforts to support the future of the nation's energy infrastructure.
