WASHINGTON – Senator John Hoeven, Ranking Member of the Senate Agriculture Appropriations Committee and a senior member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, today helped pass a Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution to stop the Biden administration from allowing beef imports from Paraguay. Hoeven cosponsored the bipartisan CRA, which was approved by a vote of 70-25.

Since 1997, imports of beef from Paraguay have been prohibited due to animal health concerns, specifically foot and mouth disease (FMD). However, last year the Biden administration issued a rule allowing fresh beef imports from Paraguay, a decision that was based on outdated data from site visits in 2008 and 2014. Given that, Hoeven cosponsored the CRA, which was introduced by Senators Jon Tester and Mike Rounds, to stop the imports.

Speaking about the resolution, Senator John Hoeven emphasized, "This bipartisan CRA will overturn the Biden administration’s decision to allow beef imports from Paraguay. This is about supporting U.S. ranchers, who produce the highest-quality beef in the world and also ensuring U.S. consumers have safe and affordable beef to feed their families."

The CRA received support from various organizations including the Independent Beef Association of North Dakota (I-BAND), the North Dakota Stockmen’s Association, American Farm Bureau Federation, Livestock Marketing Association, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, National Farmers Union, U.S. Cattlemen’s Association, and others.
