U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND) and U.S. Senator Mike Crapo (R-ID) have joined forces with their colleagues to advocate for the freezing of H-2A wage rates at January 2023 levels. In a letter addressed to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), the senators emphasized the growing burden faced by American food producers due to escalating costs in the agricultural sector.
“If costs continue to increase as they have, the pressure put on America’s food producers will fundamentally shift the food production model that has allowed us to be agriculturally independent and secure,” the senators expressed in their communication. They highlighted the risk of jeopardizing the nation's agricultural heritage and domestic food supply if unsustainable policies persist, leading to increased reliance on imported fruits and produce.
The senators also underscored the immediate challenges confronting farmers and ranchers, with some being compelled to make difficult decisions regarding crop harvesting labor costs. They warned that small and family-run operations could face closure if unable to afford the escalating labor expenses, posing a threat to food production and supply across the country.
In solidarity with Senators Cramer and Crapo, a group of lawmakers including Jim Risch (R-ID), Pete Ricketts (R-NE), Tim Scott (R-SC), and others, urged prompt action to support the agricultural community and ensure continued food security for American families. The senators stressed the urgency of addressing the issue to prevent further economic strain on farmers and ranchers.
The collective effort seeks to mitigate the adverse impact of the significant AEWR increase, which has surged by 5.6% nationally and raised concerns about the sustainability of agricultural operations. By appealing for a freeze on H-2A wage rates, the senators aim to safeguard the independence and resilience of the agricultural sector amidst mounting financial challenges.
The letter, endorsed by multiple senators, serves as a call to action for legislative leaders to prioritize the stability and viability of American agriculture by halting the continuous rise in labor costs. In a time of economic uncertainty and agricultural instability, the initiative led by Senators Cramer and Crapo emphasizes the critical importance of protecting the foundation of the nation's food production industry.
