WASHINGTON - In response to the severe winter ice storm that hit North Dakota from December 25 to December 27, Congressman Kelly Armstrong (R-ND) and Senators John Hoeven (R-ND) and Kevin Cramer (R-ND) have called on President Biden to approve Governor Doug Burgum's request for a major disaster declaration. This declaration would provide federal resources to support the recovery and disaster mitigation efforts in the affected areas.
The delegation, in a letter to President Biden, highlighted the extent of the damage caused by the ice storm. "The ice storm destroyed over 2,000 electrical poles, resulting in over 20,000 North Dakota residents being without power for days," stated the delegation. Preliminary Damage Assessments have estimated the damages to be over $11.5 million.
To address the ongoing recovery efforts, the delegation is urging President Biden to approve the major disaster declaration for 13 counties in North Dakota. These counties include Barnes, Cass, Dickey, Grant, LaMoure, Logan, McIntosh, Ransom, Richland, Sargent, Steele, Stutsman, and Traill.
"We support the State's request and urge you to approve it as soon as possible so the necessary Federal resources can be made available to North Dakotans," emphasized the delegation in their letter.
The major disaster declaration would unlock federal resources that would aid in the recovery and mitigation efforts in the affected areas. This assistance is crucial in helping the residents and communities affected by the ice storm to recover and rebuild.
North Dakota continues to make strides in recovering from the late December ice storm, but the support of the federal government is necessary to expedite the recovery process. The delegation's call for a major disaster declaration is an important step in ensuring that North Dakotans receive the assistance they need.
