The U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE) has awarded more than $3.1 million to North Dakota in funding for the Abandoned Mine Land (AML) Reclamation Program. This funding, made available through the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), will support the state in reclaiming abandoned and dangerous mine lands.

North Dakota has been recognized for its outstanding leadership in mine land reclamation. Senator Cramer praised the state, saying, "This award is a reflection of North Dakota's superb leadership in reclaiming mine lands. Reclamation is good stewardship, pure and simple, and our state does it better than anyone."

The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which was fully paid for, is providing real opportunities for North Dakota to address the needs of its constituents. The OSMRE's announcement builds upon a previous grant of $3.1 million allocated to North Dakota in the previous fiscal year.

The North Dakota AML Program, authorized by the DOI in 1981, administers federal funding derived from a fee on coal. This funding is used to address environmental hazards posed by abandoned coal mines.

With this new funding, North Dakota will be able to eliminate safety hazards and create opportunities for redevelopment on these abandoned mine lands. The state's commitment to reclamation and stewardship is evident through its continued efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of its communities.

By reclaiming these lands, North Dakota is not only improving the environment but also creating potential for economic growth and development. The funds provided by the OSMRE will play a crucial role in facilitating the state's ongoing reclamation efforts.

The award of $3.1 million is a testament to North Dakota's dedication to responsible resource management. It is an investment in the safety and future of the state, ensuring that abandoned mine lands are restored and repurposed effectively.

The OSMRE's continued support and funding will enable North Dakota to make significant progress in reclaiming and revitalizing abandoned mine lands. With each reclamation project, the state moves closer to a safer and more sustainable future.

North Dakota's success in mine land reclamation serves as an example to other states and communities facing similar challenges. Through collaboration and commitment, abandoned mine lands can be transformed into valuable assets for the benefit of all.
