During the American Legion Annual Department Winter Conference, Senator Kevin Cramer expressed his appreciation for the tireless advocacy of military veterans. He also highlighted some recent legislative efforts pertaining to veterans' affairs and emphasized the need to recruit more servicemembers to project strength against adversaries.

In his speech, Senator Cramer addressed the importance of projecting strength in the face of adversaries. He stated, "If we project weakness, our adversaries see vulnerability. If we project strength, they settle down." He expressed concern about the current administration projecting weakness, particularly in relation to Iran and Russia.

The senator then shared a personal experience, saying, "Earlier this week, I was able to visit with Garrett Illerbrunn's family at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. His service and the strength of his family are the epitome of the best of North Dakota and the nation." He emphasized the need to attract more individuals like Garrett and his wife Lorna to the military.

Senator Cramer acknowledged the difficulties in recruiting more servicemembers and attributed it to a lack of understanding of the cost of freedom and the benefits of serving. He commended the American Legion for their role in fostering a legacy of service and changing policies to ensure promises are kept for veterans. He stated, "That is what the Legion does so well, if not better than anybody."

In conclusion, Senator Cramer recited the fourth verse of the Star-Spangled Banner and expressed his gratitude to the audience. He said, "Thank you for all you do, and God bless."

As a member of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, Senator Cramer has been actively involved in supporting veterans' access to mental health care services and expanding health resources for those facing mental health challenges. He has also worked to increase health care coverage for veterans battling toxic exposure and improve coverage of innovative therapies for veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury.

Some of the specific legislation and efforts led by Senator Cramer include the Combat Veterans Pre-Enrollment Act of 2023, which allows combat veterans to pre-enroll in a health care benefits program prior to their discharge. He also supported the Safeguarding VA Dependent Education Benefits Act of 2023, which protects the educational benefits of spouses and dependents in cases involving domestic or sexual assault convictions or dishonorable discharge. Additionally, Senator Cramer led the TAP Promotion Act, allowing accredited members of Veterans Service Organizations to participate in transition assistance programs. He also sponsored the REMOVE Copays Act, which enables veterans to receive copay-free mental health and substance abuse care.

Senator Cramer's efforts reflect his dedication to supporting military veterans and ensuring they receive the care and benefits they deserve.
