WASHINGTON - Senator John Hoeven this week joined U.S. Senators Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska) and Tim Kaine (D-Va.) in introducing a bipartisan resolution commending Taiwan for its commitment to democratic elections and institutions, regardless of the Chinese Communist Party’s continued coercion, prior to Taiwan’s upcoming election.
“Our resolution shows support for the people of Taiwan and commends their dedication to holding democratic elections,” said Hoeven. “We must continue to encourage our democratic and free market allies and partners, including Taiwan, to resist Chinese coercion, deter Chinese aggression and enhance cooperation and coordination to maintain peace in the region.”
The resolution, which has a long list of cosponsors from both parties, commends Taiwan for its history of democratic elections and expresses support for Taiwan in the preservation of its democratic institutions.
Taiwan, officially known as the Republic of China (ROC), began transitioning to a liberal democracy in the late 1980s. Since then, it has held numerous free, fair, and representative elections, including presidential, legislative, and local elections. Taiwan has also achieved the peaceful transfer of power between political parties multiple times, a testament to the strength of its political system.
The resolution highlights the democratic institutions of Taiwan, which protect fundamental freedoms such as speech, press, assembly, and religion. The citizens of Taiwan have exercised these freedoms, resulting in a vibrant civil society, a strong media sector, and an advanced business community.
The prosperity and freedoms enjoyed by the people of Taiwan are in stark contrast to the oppression faced by residents of the People’s Republic of China. The resolution acknowledges the historical partnership between the United States and Taiwan in standing against coercion and threats from China.
On January 13, 2024, Taiwan will hold its eighth presidential election and tenth legislative election since its transition to democracy. The resolution expresses concern about interference in Taiwan's 2024 elections by the Chinese Communist Party and emphasizes the commitment to a strong partnership with Taiwan, regardless of the election outcome.
The resolution concludes by reaffirming the commitment to support Taiwan's self-defense and the liberty of its people through effective deterrence using all elements of United States power.
This bipartisan resolution serves as a testament to the unwavering support of the United States for Taiwan's commitment to democracy and its determination to resist Chinese coercion. It sends a clear message that the international community stands with Taiwan in its pursuit of freedom and self-governance.
