Dickinson State University marked National First Responders Day on October 28 by recognizing the work of firefighters, police officers, paramedics, and other emergency personnel. The university highlighted its ongoing support for first responders through academic programs in fire science, criminal justice, and nursing.
The university launched its Associate in Applied Science in Fire Science program in fall 2023 through a partnership with the Dickinson Fire Department. Now entering its second year, the program has seen its first graduates and is preparing to expand by introducing a bachelor’s degree in fire science and Emergency Medical Technician certification.
“DSU’s partnership with the Dickinson Fire Department enables our program to provide hands-on training with experienced firefighters who are regional leaders in training the next generation. We are especially proud that many of our students want to stay and serve in Dickinson and communities throughout southwest North Dakota,” said Dr. Liz Freedman Fowler, dean of the School of Applied Sciences.
The program is directed by Dickinson Fire Chief Jeremy Presnell. Instructors include Officer Jared Rhode, who has received the North Dakota Fire Service Instructor of the Year award. Paramedic Dillon Brock noted his enthusiasm for collaboration between fire science and health science programs at DSU, which now feature training opportunities such as those offered in a newly opened cadaver lab.
Dickinson State University stated that these initiatives reflect its commitment to preparing students for roles as first responders who can address changing needs across southwest North Dakota and neighboring areas.
