Taxpayers in North Dakota who requested an extension for their individual income tax returns are reminded that the deadline to file is Wednesday, October 15, 2025.
“Individuals were required to pay any taxes owed by the April deadline, but they also had the option to file for an extension to submit their state income tax return,” said Tax Commissioner Brian Kroshus. “If you received an extension, it’s important you to take a moment to complete and file your return before the upcoming deadline arrives.”
According to the Office of State Tax Commissioner, those who obtained a federal extension may file their state returns without penalty until October 15. Electronic filing is recommended for timely submission, though paper returns are accepted if postmarked by the deadline. Returns can also be delivered in person at the North Dakota Office of State Tax Commissioner on the 8th floor of the State Capitol during regular business hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Interest will continue to accrue on any unpaid balances from April 15, and penalties will be assessed if returns are not filed by October 15.
Taxpayers needing help with their state income tax returns can contact the North Dakota Office of State Tax Commissioner at 701-328-1247 for assistance.
