North Dakota will begin its commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence with a free, public event on Sunday, Nov. 2. The ND250 Kickoff Celebration will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Central Time at the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum in Bismarck.
The event is scheduled to coincide with North Dakota Statehood Day, which marks the state's admission to the Union in 1889. Organizers say this celebration will launch statewide efforts to recognize North Dakota’s role in American history through storytelling, culture, community engagement, and service.
“This is a celebration for every North Dakotan,” said Bill Peterson, director of the State Historical Society of North Dakota and chair of the ND250 Commission. “From the music and performances to the educational activities, the ND250 Kickoff is the start of a movement to reflect on where we’ve come from and how we’ll shape our future.”
Attendees can expect an afternoon featuring musical performances by groups such as the North Dakota National Guard Band and St. Mary’s Central High School Wind Orchestra from Bismarck. Folk artist Chuck Suchy will also perform. Special appearances are planned by Theodore Roosevelt reenactor John Dobmeier and former Governor Jack Dalrymple.
The museum will host interactive booths and exhibits organized by community groups, state organizations, and military representatives. Activities for children include face painting, patriotic crafts, and visits from mascots representing the Bismarck Larks baseball team.
Organizers describe the ND250 Kickoff Celebration as an event for all ages that aims to help participants learn about history, connect with others in their community, and celebrate together as preparations begin for America’s 250th anniversary.
