Free walking tour brochures featuring the Highland Acres Historic District are now available, according to the Bismarck Historic Preservation Commission (HPC). The new brochures provide historical context about the neighborhood’s development and include a map that highlights significant buildings in the area.

Highland Acres was established after World War II as a community for veterans and their families. Its importance was recognized when it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. “It’s been a dream come true to see it listed on the National Register as Bismarck’s first mid-century neighborhood and have its story told,” said Bismarck Historic Preservation Commissioner Amy Sakariassen.

The Highland Acres brochure is the latest in a series of walking tour guides produced by the HPC. Other brochures cover the Downtown Historic District and the Cathedral Area Historic District. “This brochure has been produced to make Highland Acre’s history available to both residents and visitors and we encourage the community to celebrate and explore it,” Sakariassen added.

Residents can pick up free copies of these brochures at the City of Bismarck Community Development Department office during regular business hours. The project was funded by the Historic Preservation Fund, National Park Service, and Department of the Interior. The commission noted that any opinions or recommendations in these materials do not necessarily reflect those of the Department of the Interior.
