Free walking tour brochures for the Highland Acres Historic District are now available, according to the Bismarck Historic Preservation Commission (HPC). The brochures offer details about the neighborhood’s development and include a map highlighting notable buildings in the area. They are intended to help residents and visitors learn about local history while encouraging physical activity.
Highland Acres was established after World War II as a community for veterans and their families. The district has been recognized on the National Register of Historic Places for its historical and architectural importance. “It’s been a dream come true to see it listed on the National Register as Bismarck’s first mid-century neighborhood and have its story told,” said Amy Sakariassen, a commissioner with the Bismarck Historic Preservation Commission.
The new Highland Acres brochure is part of a series that also includes walking tours of the Downtown Historic District and Cathedral Area Historic District. These materials serve as educational resources to promote awareness of Bismarck’s past. “This brochure has been produced to make Highland Acre’s history available to both residents and visitors and we encourage the community to celebrate and explore it,” Sakariassen added.
Brochures can be picked up free of charge at the City of Bismarck Community Development Department office during regular business hours. For more information or feedback, contact Lauren Oster at 701-355-1840 or by email.
