City of Bismarck Heavy Equipment Operator Gary Steiner secured first place in the Motor grader event and achieved his second overall title at the Bismarck Public Works Equipment Operator Roadeo held on September 24. Steiner had previously won the overall title in 2023.

Other winners included Jared Schwab, who finished first in the Single-axle plow truck event, and Chad Stroh, who led the Loader competition. Schwab entered this year’s competition as the defending co-champion for the Motor grader event after sharing that title with Josh Ficek in 2024.

The annual roadeo is designed not only as a competition but also as a training opportunity for equipment operators. It allows participants to practice their skills in a controlled environment that replicates real working conditions, except for snow and ice. This helps prepare them for maintaining roadways during winter months. Approximately 55 competitors participated in this year’s event.

The City of Bismarck’s Roads and Streets Division is responsible for maintaining close to 400 center line miles and about 1,700 lane miles of asphalt and concrete roads throughout the year.

For more information, visit the Roads and Streets Division webpage.
