Mitchell Bitz, Fire Chief | Mandan City Fire Department
The Mandan City Fire Department will conduct live fire training inside the former Mandan High School building on Tuesday, September 23, starting at 6 p.m. The exercise aims to provide fire suppression training for department staff using the vacant school facility.
During the event, residents may notice fire trucks, smoke, and possibly visible flames. Training staff will follow a detailed plan and comply with all relevant codes. According to the department, the building itself will not be destroyed; instead, controlled burns will be limited to specific interior rooms as outlined in the department’s burn plan.
Fire Chief Mitch Bitz stated, “The ability to train in a live fire environment in a large space will provide an invaluable opportunity to learn in an atmosphere that we don’t have the facilities to simulate on a regular basis.”
For safety reasons, there may be fire lines and some street closures around the area. The department has indicated it will work to minimize disruptions during the training session. Residents are welcome to observe as long as they stay outside of closure zones.
Questions about the training can be directed to Battalion Chief Shane Weltikol via email. The fire department expressed appreciation to the Mandan Public School District for allowing use of the facility and emphasized its commitment to improving performance through this training opportunity.
