An accident occurred on Tuesday, September 16, near Lakota at the intersection of eastbound US Highway 2 and ND Highway 1. The crash involved two vehicles: a 2017 Volvo truck tractor with a trailer and a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The North Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.

The collision happened around 4:15 PM when the Jeep, driven by James Burtness, 83, from Lakota, North Dakota, crossed the eastbound lanes of US Highway 2. It was then struck by the Volvo truck driven by Robert Jovic, 37, from Lackawanna, New York. Following the impact, both vehicles ended up in the south ditch.

Jovic was not injured in the crash and was wearing his seatbelt at the time. However, Burtness sustained serious injuries and was not using a seatbelt. He was transported to Altru Hospital in Grand Forks for treatment.

Lt. Jenna Clawson Huibregtse from the North Dakota Highway Patrol said that "the crash remains under investigation." She can be contacted for further information at ndhpsafetyedu@nd.gov or by phone at 701-328-2447.
