New banners have been installed in two of Bismarck’s historic districts, the Cathedral Area and Highland Acres, according to the Bismarck Historic Preservation Commission (HPC). The installation took place within the past week.

The Cathedral Area and Highland Acres are among three recognized historic districts in Bismarck. “Highland Acres and the Cathedral Area represent enduring legacies within Bismarck’s rich historical tapestry,” said Damita Engel, chair of the HPC. The new banners were created to reflect each district’s history and serve as wayfinding aids for visitors.

The Cathedral Area Historic District is known for its variety of architectural styles, which demonstrate both economic diversity and social development over time. The 25 new banners in this area were designed to combine these elements, highlighting the neighborhood’s distinctive appearance.

In Highland Acres, banners had already been installed in May 2024. Following positive community feedback and requests for more banners, 14 additional ones have now been added. The design chosen for Highland Acres aims to blend nostalgic themes with modern style, drawing from architectural influences of its era.
