The Bismarck Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) has installed new streetlight banners in two of the city’s historic districts: Cathedral Area and Highland Acres. The banners aim to help visitors navigate these neighborhoods while also highlighting their historical significance.

“Highland Acres and the Cathedral Area represent enduring legacies within Bismarck’s rich historical tapestry,” said Damita Engel, chair of the HPC. According to Engel, the banners were designed to reflect the history of each district and serve as wayfinding aids for those exploring the area.

The Cathedral Area Historic District is known for its variety of architectural styles, which showcase both economic diversity and social development over time. The 25 new banners installed there incorporate elements from different architectural periods found in the neighborhood.

In Highland Acres, banners were first put up in May 2024. Due to positive community feedback and requests for more, 14 additional banners have now been added. The design for this district draws on its mid-century architectural themes while including modern touches.

Engel noted that installing these banners is an important step in preserving and celebrating local heritage. “We are proud to recognize these neighborhoods as vital contributors to our community’s heritage and invite all residents and visitors to share in this appreciation of our local history,” she said.
