The ND250 Commission is encouraging North Dakotans to volunteer as part of the America Gives initiative, which aims to make 2026—the 250th anniversary of American independence—the largest year of service in U.S. history.
America Gives is a nationwide effort under the America250 campaign, involving states across the country. According to a WalletHub survey, Americans contribute over 4.1 billion hours of volunteer work each year along with charitable donations. North Dakota ranks 15th nationally for its combined rates of volunteering and charitable giving.
The initiative highlights the collective responsibility citizens share in maintaining and improving their communities, reflecting on the efforts that built both the nation and local areas.
“This is our chance to put North Dakota on the map as a state that works together and gives back,” said Bill Peterson, State Historical Society of North Dakota director and ND250 commission chair. “Whether it’s volunteering for the first time, teaching young people the value of giving back, or challenging yourself to find a new place to make an impact, every act of service counts. Together, we can make the Semiquincentennial a record-setting year of giving while also raising up our communities and the people and organizations they support.”
North Dakotans are being asked to pledge their commitment ahead of America’s 250th birthday by joining efforts with others across the nation in community service activities. More information about pledging can be found at america250.org/america-gives/.
