Bismarck-Burleigh Public Health (BBPH) and Heartview Foundation are collaborating to provide a free Narcan training session for the community. The event is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, September 17, at BBPH’s office located at 407 S. 26th St.

Cathy Palczewski, opioid treatment program case manager at Heartview Foundation, said, “Training our community and workplaces in the use of Narcan is an important life-saving solution. Safe communities are strong communities. Heartview Foundation is happy to partner with BBPH because this training helps both value people’s lives and save people’s lives.”

The training will cover how to identify signs of an opioid overdose and how to administer Narcan correctly. Attendees will receive a free Narcan kit after completing the session.

Registration is required due to limited space. Those interested can register by calling 701-355-1597 or visiting https://www.eventbrite.com/e/free-narcan-training-september-17th-tickets-1530492236479.

Narcan is used as an emergency medication that can temporarily restore breathing in individuals experiencing an overdose from fentanyl or other opioids.

Susan Kahler, substance abuse prevention coordinator at BBPH, stated, “Our goal is to train the public on the signs and symptoms of an overdose, the immediate actions they should take to get first responders to the scene, and steps to stabilize and potentially revive an individual who has overdosed.”

BBPH funds these trainings through State Opioid Response Grants that also support prescription drug take-back events.

For additional information or future training opportunities, contact BBPH at 701-355-1597.
