Dickinson State University has established a new position focused on advancing digital transformation and operational efficiency on campus. Josh Nichols, an alumnus and long-serving employee of the university, has been named as the first Director of Digital Process Improvement.

The creation of this role aligns with the North Dakota University System’s Envision 2035 strategic plan, which aims to modernize public higher education in the state through digital innovation and data-driven strategies. The plan emphasizes updating campus operations and improving access to information across institutions.

In his new capacity, Nichols will oversee efforts to enhance workflows using digital tools. His duties include mapping out processes for key university functions, cataloging departmental software, and reviewing related costs and agreements.

“We’re committed to improving efficiency and transparency across all departments,” said Leslie Wiestock, vice president for finance and administration. “The Director of Digital Process Improvement will help us streamline our systems and make data more accessible and useful for everyone on campus.”

Nichols is expected to collaborate with Information Technology Services, software vendors, and contractors to ensure that DSU’s systems allow for effective data exchange while meeting operational requirements. He will also coordinate meetings among departments to identify challenges related to data management and connect those needs with technical solutions.

“This position is a vital step in modernizing the way we work and serve our students,” said DSU President Scott Molander. “Josh’s deep understanding of our campus and operations makes him the ideal person to lead this important initiative.”

Nichols previously worked in student affairs and university relations at DSU. Reflecting on his appointment, he stated: “As a DSU graduate and long-time employee, I care deeply about the university and its future. I’m excited to take on this role and help improve the systems and processes that support our students, faculty, and staff every day.”

The new director position was created with the goal of ensuring greater consistency, clarity, and accessibility in DSU’s digital processes for all members of the campus community.
