Dickinson State University has announced the creation of the Office of Marketing and Communications (OMC), which will replace the former Office of University Relations. The new office is tasked with focusing on strategic marketing, internal communication, and external engagement.

The university said that this change aligns with President Scott Molander’s vision to improve DSU’s marketing and communication efforts across all platforms. According to the announcement, OMC will play a key role in student recruitment by increasing digital marketing activities and expanding the university’s presence on social media.

“Strengthening our marketing and communications is a critical step in advancing the mission of Dickinson State,” said President Molander. “This transition positions us to tell the DSU story with greater clarity and impact, both within our community and across a broader digital landscape.”

Kierra Mathern has been named Interim Director of Marketing, Communications, and Alumni Relations. Mathern, who grew up in Dickinson and graduated from DSU with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication, previously worked at the DSU Heritage Foundation (DSU HF) as Alumni Relations and Event Coordinator. She also holds a Master of Business Administration and a Master of Entrepreneurship degree.

“Kierra has always shown a deep commitment to DSU and a clear talent for strategic communication,” said Ty Orton, Executive Director of the DSU HF. “Her work ethic, creativity, and passion for the university made a lasting impact here, and I’m confident she’ll continue to elevate DSU in her new role.”

Mathern recently served as Interim Director of Strategic Initiatives and Events while continuing her work at DSU HF before taking on her current interim appointment.

“It’s an exciting time to be at Dickinson State,” said Mathern. “With the launch of the Office of Marketing and Communications, we have a unique opportunity to tell DSU’s story in a more strategic, authentic, and impactful way.”

Elena Stickel serves as Brand Manager for OMC. Stickel first came to DSU on an athletic scholarship before earning her degree in business administration with minors in office administration and graphic design. Over 15 years at DSU, she has held several roles including Conference Coordinator for Extended Campus and Interim Director of Institutional Research before moving into marketing as a graphic designer. She became Brand Manager in 2024.

Hannah Dunham joins as Communication and Social Media Specialist after graduating from Baylor University. She brings experience from digital marketing roles in private industry. At DSU she focuses on creating content that highlights academic programs and campus culture while seeking to expand engagement through social media channels.

Josh Nichols was appointed Director of Digital Process Improvement after serving 18 years at DSU in various positions including TRiO programs, Strom Center, University Relations, and Esports coordination. Nichols now works on projects aimed at streamlining operations across campus through technology integration.

The OMC team is being expanded further with one part-time writer added for storytelling efforts about university achievements. In addition, a Digital Media Specialist position shared with Admissions will focus on content development aimed at prospective students.

The university stated that these changes are intended to increase visibility for Dickinson State University while supporting growth initiatives both locally and online.
