Two injured in Steele County vehicle crash under investigation

A two-vehicle crash in Steele County resulted in injuries on July 17, 2025. The incident occurred at around 11:26 a.m. CST on Steele County Road 8, approximately 10 miles east of Finley. The road and weather conditions were reported as good.

The collision involved a northbound 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee and a 2009 Peterbilt truck tractor with a side dump gravel trailer, both traveling on Steele County Road 8. As the Peterbilt slowed to stop for a sign at the intersection with ND Highway 200, the Jeep struck its rear after cresting a hill.

The driver of the Jeep, a 31-year-old woman from Devils Lake, ND, sustained serious injuries. A juvenile male passenger, aged two and also from Devils Lake, was injured. Both were wearing seatbelts and were transported by ambulance from the scene.

The driver of the Peterbilt, a 53-year-old man from Hillsboro, ND, was uninjured and also wearing a seatbelt. The North Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Agencies involved in responding included the Steele County Sheriff Department, West Traill Ambulance Service, Hatton Fire Department, and Portland Fire Department.
