A new public art initiative, the Mandan Art Alley, is set to debut in downtown Mandan this summer. The project will be located in the alley behind the 200 block of West Main Street, between First and Second Avenue NW.
Initially proposed in the 2018 Downtown Plan, the concept was revived in 2024 by a group of local business owners, event planners, and arts advocates.
The City Commission has approved up to $35,000 in additional funding through the Mandan Visitors Fund to support this effort. The fund is sourced from a 1% restaurant and lodging tax designated for capital improvements that draw visitors to the community.
Originally planned to feature five to seven large-scale murals in its first phase, with one mural incorporating community input, the project will now include 15 murals thanks to additional funding. Themes for these murals will cover Indigenous heritage, immigration journeys, connections to land and water, shared histories, and ideas centered on youth and innovation. All mural locations have been secured with signed permissions from property owners.
A call for artists earlier this spring resulted in the selection of 14 artists for participation in the art alley project. Among them are five artists who either reside or have studio space in Mandan.
