Commissioner Jon Godfread | North Dakota Insurance Department
Following recent severe storms in North Dakota, Insurance Commissioner Jon Godfread is urging residents to inspect their properties for damage and start the insurance claims process promptly. "While North Dakota is no stranger to summer weather, the scale and intensity of last night’s storm were especially significant. Our hearts also go out to those who lost their lives during this terrible storm," said Godfread. He emphasized the importance of acting quickly, documenting everything, and protecting property from further harm.
The North Dakota Insurance Department has provided guidelines for policyholders after a storm. Residents should check roofs, siding, windows, vehicles, and other structures for signs of hail, wind, or water damage. Documenting the damage with photos and videos before making temporary repairs is crucial when filing an insurance claim. It is advised to take steps to secure property and prevent additional losses while keeping receipts for any materials or services used.
If a home becomes uninhabitable due to storm damage, homeowners or renters policies may cover temporary housing and other living expenses; receipts should be kept. Filing a claim as soon as possible is recommended, with policy numbers handy and details about the damage ready. Noting the time, date, and contact details when filing a claim and keeping copies of all correspondence and estimates are important steps.
In major storm aftermaths, there can be dishonest contractors offering quick repairs for cash or demanding full payment upfront. Residents are advised to be cautious of high-pressure tactics or contractors refusing to provide written estimates and proof of insurance. It is suggested to get at least three written estimates from separate contractors before hiring one and working with insurance companies to find reputable contractors.
