Morton County has announced a collaboration with Grant County to host a Leafy Spurge Beetle Collection Day on July 1 at 11 a.m. Central Time. The event will take place at the Boy Scout Camp by Lake Tschida, aiming to support efforts in controlling invasive plant species.
According to the announcement, the event location is approximately 14 miles north of Elgin or south of Glen Ullin along Highway 49, with directional signs provided for guidance. Participants are encouraged to bring a bug net, though some will be available for purchase or loan. It is recommended that attendees use a cooler with ice packs for transporting collected beetles safely. Meals and drinks will be offered to all attendees. Additionally, NDSU Extension staff will conduct water testing for livestock safety; participants interested in this service should bring a water sample from their stock dam or tank.
The Morton County Weed Control Office, led by Weed Control Officer Cody Schnabel, is dedicated to managing noxious weeds along state, county, and township roadways to prevent their spread. The office works closely with landowners to promote effective weed control strategies and emphasizes leadership and education in long-term management using cultural, biological, and chemical methods.
Established in 1981, the Morton County Weed Control District divides the county into six districts managed by a six-member Weed Board appointed by the County Commission. This board meets regularly to guide operations. Services provided include weed identification, assistance with control planning, provision of biological agents for leafy spurge and other weeds, partial herbicide cost reimbursement for certain lands, and infestation reporting.
Morton County's mission is to serve and strengthen its community through efficient and ethical services. The county highlights collaboration, integrity, and respect as core values while focusing on responsive customer service and public trust. Its vision promotes a culture where all employees are motivated to make a positive impact daily.
