Reports have emerged of a computer virus scam targeting residents in Mercer County. The scam begins with a pop-up message on the victim's computer, claiming that their device is infected with a virus and providing a 1-800 number to call for assistance. Those who contact the number are subjected to manipulative tactics aimed at extracting large sums of money.
The scammers instill fear by falsely accusing victims of accessing adult and illegal websites, creating panic and urgency to resolve the fabricated issue. Victims are instructed to withdraw nearly all their funds from their bank accounts, with reports indicating demands exceeding $20,000 in cash.
During the withdrawal process, victims are told to keep the call active on speakerphone, allowing scammers to monitor the transaction. Once the cash is obtained, victims are directed to meet an unspecified individual and hand over the money in a bag.
This tactic has been reported multiple times, with calls lasting over four hours as scammers attempt to wear down their targets. Victims are reminded that falling for such scams does not reflect on their intelligence or character. Sharing experiences can help build a support system for others facing similar situations.
A disclaimer advises against clicking on pop-ups or trusting individuals requesting money through these means. Caution and critical thinking are encouraged when encountering such scenarios.
