The Bismarck Veterans Memorial Public Library has introduced digital radon detector kits to its collection, allowing residents to check them out for 14 days. This initiative is in collaboration with the UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences and the American Cancer Society. The aim is to help residents identify and address elevated radon levels in their homes.

Radon is a radioactive gas that cannot be seen or smelled and is known as the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. In North Dakota, two-thirds of homes surpass the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) recommended radon levels, making it a significant health concern. Testing during winter months, when homes are more tightly sealed, is considered most effective.

The kits come with instructions for safe usage. If a reading exceeds 4 pCi/L, which is above the EPA’s recommended action level, remediation steps should be taken. More information can be found at www.epa.gov/radon or deq.nd.gov/wm/radon.

For those interested in borrowing a kit, they are available at the library's checkout desk. For further details, contact Matt Hovland, Head of Circulation Services at Bismarck Veterans Memorial Public Library.

Kevin R. Tengesdal from Bismarck Veterans Memorial Public Library issued this announcement.
