Sidewalks in downtown Bismarck are undergoing a transformation with the introduction of colorful, interactive art installations. This new initiative, called "Movement Maze," aims to promote physical activity and community engagement while enhancing public spaces.
The project integrates public art with health promotion through walkable designs that encourage play, conversation, and active lifestyles. These installations are strategically placed at key locations around the city for residents to explore and engage with as they emerge.
Three locations have been selected for the initial rollout of the Movement Maze:
- The sidewalk near Brick Oven Bakery, spanning from Fourth Street to Broadway Avenue, is already completed and attracting pedestrians.
- A second maze will be situated on the north side of the Bismarck Veterans Memorial Library on Avenue B, adjacent to an existing labyrinth.
- A third maze is planned for installation at the corner of Fifth Street and Broadway Avenue.
Katie Johnke, RDN, LRD, Nutrition and Health Promotion Coordinator said: “Movement Mazes invite all ages to move more, laugh more and connect with one another — all while reimagining public space.” She added that it is "art you can walk on" which can be incorporated into daily routines for better health.
