On May 13, 2025, the Williams County Sheriff's Office responded to a situation involving a barricaded subject in Buford Township. The incident occurred at the Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site located on the 15000 block of Highway 1804. Law enforcement was alerted to a disturbance around 8 am CT, with deputies arriving shortly after.

"The Northwest Crisis Negotiations Team is actively utilizing verbal crisis management techniques to de-escalate the subject," stated an update from the sheriff's office. Fortunately, all staff and visitors had evacuated safely before law enforcement arrived, and no injuries were reported.

The roads leading to Fort Union were temporarily closed but have since reopened. However, authorities requested that the public avoid the area as investigations continue.

By 6 pm on May 13th, Ian Patrick Stewart, age 36, was taken into custody with assistance from both the Williams County SWAT Team and the Northwest Crisis Negotiations Team. He will be transported to the Williams County Correctional Center with charges pending.

"The Williams County Sheriff’s Office will provide a final update once charges are finalized," assured officials.

The site remains closed until May 14th while further updates are expected as more information becomes available. There is currently no threat to public safety.
