Phase Two of the Williston U.S. Highway 2 improvement project is set to begin on Wednesday, May 7, as the initiative progresses with its infrastructure enhancements. This development primarily targets the Williston Square area and its surrounding corridors.
The final work for Phase One is scheduled for Monday, May 5, and Tuesday, May 6. On Monday, the median removals will be carried out along Highway 2. By nightfall, the existing city traffic signal lights will be deactivated and removed. On Tuesday, new temporary traffic signals will be installed and activated, with flaggers present to manage traffic flow. These signals will mimic a four-way stop and will continue allowing left turns.
As Phase Two begins on Wednesday, May 7, new traffic management measures will be introduced. Traffic will be redirected to run head-to-head on the existing eastbound and northbound lanes, with the westbound and southbound lanes closed for ongoing construction work. This phase will also see the commencement of crossover and asphalt work, the removal of frontage roads, and major removal operations.
The project, which had its preliminary planning initiated in March, will see the demolition of structures on newly acquired right-of-way starting this week. The entire construction process will extend over the 2025 construction season.
The public is encouraged to follow the project updates available on www.dot.nd.gov/williston-highway-2, as well as on North Dakota Department of Transportation and City of Williston social media pages. Motorists are advised to stay vigilant, adhere to posted signage, and be cautious of workers within the construction zone.
