The mayors' offices of Bismarck and Mandan, along with the Bismarck-Mandan Chamber EDC, have introduced a new initiative called "Bismarck-Mandan: Where Home is More than Hello." This effort aims to encourage residents to create a more welcoming environment for newcomers to the Bismarck-Mandan area.
The initiative emphasizes the importance of making new arrivals feel welcome to encourage them to settle in the community permanently. Inviting newcomers is seen as beneficial for the local economy, helping to launch and sustain businesses, filling job vacancies, supporting healthcare and educational institutions, and enhancing community vibrancy with diverse skills and perspectives. Research from a 2024 Pew study highlights the societal need for connection, as one in six Americans reportedly feel isolated or lonely.
Bismarck-Mandan Chamber EDC Director Brenda Nagel stated, "New people are coming to Bismarck-Mandan as students at the University of Mary and Bismarck State College, retired people from rural North Dakota, temporary employees in our healthcare organizations, local businesses for workforce, and legal immigrants." Nagel emphasizes the significance of welcoming these individuals effectively.
The Bismarck-Mandan population grows by approximately 1,000 people annually, with the University of Mary revealing that two-thirds of their students are from outside North Dakota.
Mandan Mayor Jim Froelich expressed, “A strong community is built on kindness, connection and a shared commitment to making everyone feel at home. Whether you lived here for generations or just arrived, you are a valued part of our community.”
Bismarck Mayor Mike Schmitz highlighted existing community efforts, saying, “Some people open their homes and hearts to new people coming into their workplaces and neighborhoods already. We want this effort to reach those who may not have considered how it feels to be new in our community.”
To support the initiative, the Make Your MarkBismarck-Mandan website, sponsored by the Chamber, offers a platform for clubs and interest groups to register and connect with newcomers and residents. Business owners can demonstrate their commitment by displaying a designated window sticker available from city offices or the Chamber.
Local business owners and organizations are encouraged to request informational presentations and window clings through the Bismarck-Mandan Chamber EDC.
