Ty Orton Executive Director/Acting President | Dickinson State University
After 34 years at Dickinson State University (DSU), Dr. Debora Dragseth announced her retirement. Since 1989, she significantly impacted the university’s academic environment through her roles in the classroom, leadership positions, and initiatives.
Dr. Dragseth served as Vice-President of Academic and Student Affairs and Provost, Chair of the School of Business and Entrepreneurship, and Director of the Theodore Roosevelt Honors Leadership Program, among other roles. Her work left a mark on DSU and the broader academic community.
During her leadership through the coronavirus pandemic, DSU saw significant enrollment increases, contrary to national trends. Her initiatives included introducing new programs and enhancing educational flexibility. She secured funding for projects like the nursing simulation lab and the expansion of the Theodore Roosevelt Center and contributed to the DSU Counseling Center’s establishment.
"Dr. Dragseth’s impact on Dickinson State University is immeasurable," said Ty Orton, DSU acting president. "Her dedication to students, innovative thinking, and commitment to academic excellence have shaped our institution for the better. She leaves behind a legacy of compassion and leadership that will continue to inspire us all."
She remained committed to her students, aiding them in presenting at conferences and designing innovative learning experiences like the Red Paperclip Challenge. Her approach to effective teaching involved addressing each student’s unique challenges.
“What is going on in your life right now that I need to be aware of?” was a hallmark question she asked struggling students, emphasizing her dedication to fostering success through compassion.
Her contributions extended beyond DSU, as she engaged with local organizations such as the Dickinson Manufacturers Roundtable and Rotary International. Her published works in writing and journalism received accolades.
Reflecting on her career, Dr. Dragseth shared, “Since coming to DSU, I have never held a position that I did not love or that didn’t bring me joy. Teaching, however, has always been my touchstone.”
As she retires, Dr. Dragseth is excited for DSU's future and thankful for the support received from colleagues, students, and community members. “Individual joy is contagious, but shared joy is transformative. I hope that I brought joy to the classroom every day by being passionate, prepared, and dedicated to student development.”
"Working alongside Dr. Dragseth has been a privilege," said Holly Gruhlke, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost. "Her commitment to student success, creative teaching approaches, and leadership development have been outstanding. She has been a mentor to many, including myself, and her passion for education will be dearly missed."
A retirement party is scheduled for May 15, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. MT in the DSU Student Center Ballroom. All are invited to attend and honor her contributions to the university.
