Dickinson State University (DSU) has been acknowledged by the 2025 Carnegie Classification and the American Council on Education (ACE) as a Professions-Focused Baccalaureate Small Institution. The updated classification system reflects modern dynamics within the higher education sector in the United States. It groups institutions based on degree type, academic focus, and size, using data from the academic years 2020–2023 as reported to the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS).

Furthermore, DSU has been distinguished with a Higher Access, Medium Earnings status under the 2025 Student Access and Earnings Classification. This evaluation model assesses how effectively institutions serve diverse student populations and the economic performance of graduates eight years post-entry. The model bases its assessments on data from IPEDS, the U.S. Department of Education's College Scorecard, and the U.S. Census Bureau. It looks at access through Pell Grant participation and enrollment of underrepresented students, while earnings are evaluated in the context of local demographic and economic conditions.

“DSU’s recognition as a higher access, medium earning institution highlights our dedication to preparing students for meaningful careers, especially in fields like education,” said Holly Gruhlke, Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost. “We’re proud to provide accessible, high-quality education that empowers graduates to make a real impact while earning wages that support their lifestyles.”

The Carnegie Classification’s Economic Mobility Index describes "Higher Access, Medium Earnings" institutions as those enrolling a significant number of low-income students, as indicated by a high percentage of Pell Grant recipients, while ensuring graduates achieve moderate earnings post-graduation. Such classifications underscore the importance of these institutions in facilitating social and economic mobility, despite graduates not earning the highest salaries compared to more elite institutions. These earnings are considered above average for institutions serving similar demographics.

The classifications support DSU's mission to enhance educational access and provide students with skills for long-term career success.
