The Bismarck Forestry Division is organizing a community recognition program and ceremonial tree planting on Friday, May 2, at 1 PM. This event will take place at Custer Park in Bismarck. The event is open to the public, and attendees are encouraged to participate.
This year's Arbor Day theme is “Branch Out and Make a Difference.” Each year, a tree is planted in honor of a local citizen who has significantly contributed to Bismarck’s urban forest. This year’s tree will be dedicated to the late Stan Churchill. His efforts and service on the Forestry Advisory Board and his commitment to trees in Bismarck are being recognized despite his passing in 2023.
During the ceremony, Apple Seed Awards will be given for 2024 public property beautification efforts, along with a Beautification Award for private property beautification. Sponsors of the 2024 Partners in Planting program will also be acknowledged. Additionally, Bismarck is celebrating its 48th year as a Tree City USA.
Mayor Mike Schmitz will read the Arbor Day Proclamation and deliver opening remarks. Fourth graders from Dorothy Moses Grade School and third graders from St. Mary’s Grade School will present Arbor Day-themed presentations. The event will conclude with the ceremonial tree planting, weather permitting.
A related event, Plant a Tree with Scheels, will occur on April 29 from 3 PM to 6 PM. The first 100 families participating will receive a free evergreen seedling in celebration of Arbor Day.
