Bismarck State College (BSC) is set to commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Day, known as Yom HaShoah, on Thursday, April 24, at noon. This date marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of concentration camps, which signified the end of the Holocaust, during which approximately 6 million Jews were killed between 1941 and 1945 in Nazi-occupied Europe. "Yom HaShoah, Israel’s Holocaust Memorial Day, is a day of remembrance for the lives lost and those affected," occurs this year from the evening of April 23 until the evening of April 24.
The event at BSC will include a memorial candle lighting with speeches delivered by several officials and community leaders, including BSC Interim President Brent Sanford, Commissioner Zachary Greenberg of the North Dakota Department of Labor and Human Rights, Steve Hunegs of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas, and Joy Wezelman from the Bismarck Hebrew Congregation. Musical pieces will be presented by Abby Karr and David Sorenson.
In addition, attendees will have the opportunity to view the Transfer of Memory Photography Exhibit at the BSC Library, available until May 20. This exhibit showcases Holocaust survivors residing in Minnesota, depicted in their home environments.
BSC's event is open to the public and will take place at the BSC Advanced Technology Center located at 1220 Schafer St., Bismarck, N.D. A media advisory notes restrictions, including a prohibition on photography and audio/visual recording to preserve the solemnity of the occasion.
