A writing workshop led by award-winning author Jill Kandel will be held at Bismarck Veterans Memorial Public Library. The session, scheduled for May 6, 2025, will focus on adding creativity to memoir writing. During the event, Kandel will elaborate on techniques to make memoirs more engaging.
Participants will explore the distinctions between diary and memoir writing and learn to incorporate thematic elements instead of following a strict chronological order. The workshop includes an hour of teaching followed by a half-hour question-and-answer session. Attendees will have the opportunity to purchase Kandel's books at the event and get them signed.
Kandel's essays are featured in prestigious publications such as The Missouri Review and The Gettysburg Review. Her works are also included in prominent anthologies and have received awards like the Autumn House Nonfiction Prize. "The Clean Daughter," her second book, was recognized as a 2024 Great Reads Book by the Library of Congress.
The workshop is open to all ages and media representatives are encouraged to attend. Mac Kemmer serves as the point of contact for further information.
The library emphasizes that the workshop aims to enhance participants' understanding and enjoyment of memoir crafting.
