The State Board of Higher Education recently appointed Dr. Dan Leingang as the interim president of Bismarck State College (BSC), set to begin his role on April 30, 2025. This decision follows the appointment of Brent Sanford as the interim chancellor of the North Dakota University System, who had served as BSC's interim president since January 2025.

In discussing the appointment, SBHE Chair Tim Mihalick stated, “Dr. Leingang has many years of institutional knowledge and experience at BSC and will ensure a smooth transition of leadership. As North Dakota’s polytechnic institution, the institution continues to serve students, staff, and faculty as a nexus for workforce needs in North Dakota.”

Leingang has been part of BSC since 2000, where he has held various faculty and leadership roles. Initially joining as an assistant professor of mathematics, he later served as department chair, dean of academic affairs in 2014, and dean of humanities, arts, and sciences. He advanced to become the vice president for academic affairs in 2017. In January 2025, Leingang was briefly the acting president of BSC before Sanford was appointed to the interim presidency.

Expressing his gratitude, Leingang said, “As a longtime member of the Bismarck State College community, I am honored to embrace this opportunity and will do my utmost to serve BSC with dedication and care in this role.”

Originating from Mandan, North Dakota, Leingang holds a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics from Concordia College, a Master of Science in mathematics, and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of North Dakota. His involvement extends to roles on the Gateway to Science Advisory Board, the Bismarck-Mandan Chamber EDC Economic Development Committee, and the Mandan Public Schools Foundation for Education. Former positions include the Mandan School Board, Concordia College National Alumni Board, and the North Dakota Governor’s Workforce Development Council.

An announcement is expected soon regarding the interim vice president for academic affairs position, which is vacant following Leingang's recent appointment.
