The Diocese of Phoenix is partnering with the University of Mary's Mary College at ASU to establish Nazareth Seminary, a new seminary aimed at shaping future priests through a distinctive and innovative formation model. The effort is a response to the longstanding need for a seminary in the American Southwest, especially given the Diocese of Phoenix's status as one of the largest and fastest-growing dioceses in the country.

Scott Lefor, director of Mary College at ASU, emphasized the strength of the existing academic programs at the college, stating, “The University of Mary was already thriving in its mission at ASU, and the diocese recognized the strength and fidelity of our academic programs.”

Nazareth Seminary introduces a household model of priestly formation, integrating seminarians directly into parish life rather than isolating them in traditional seminary settings. This approach is intended to provide seminarians with real-world ministry experience, aligning closer to the communities they will serve in the future. Father Paul Sullivan, rector of Nazareth Seminary, describes this model as a significant shift from traditional structures, highlighting the extended engagement with local parishes as an essential component.

The formation is divided into stages, each designed to foster personal and religious development while ensuring comprehensive pastoral integration. The method not only helps seminarians grow within their communities but also aims to prepare priests who are more deeply connected to their congregations.

Father Sullivan describes the initiative as potentially revolutionary for priestly formation in the church, citing, “This approach allows dioceses to truly know their men before ordination, and it gives seminarians a level of pastoral engagement that was previously unheard of.”

Nazareth Seminary, while primarily serving the Diocese of Phoenix, is also set to become a hub for seminarian formation across the region, attracting inquiries from other dioceses and religious orders. With no other seminary in the American Southwest, it positions itself as a central point for priestly training.

The Diocese of Phoenix chose the University of Mary as a partner for its strong foundation in Catholic truth and education, as underlined by Father Sullivan. “The University of Mary is one of the most respected Catholic institutions in the country,” he said.

As Nazareth Seminary makes its mark, the potential for far-reaching impacts is acknowledged. Lefor envisions the future of the seminary: “The first fruits of this partnership will be seen in just a few years, but I believe its greatest impact is still to come.” The initiative suggests significant influence in terms of priestly formation not just within the region but across the Church at large.

Nazareth Seminary signifies a new direction for the American Southwest, offering an innovative and community-based approach to seminary education grounded in traditional Catholic teachings and modern engagement.
