The Mandan Public School District has announced that 23 of its teachers have successfully completed the two-year Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) training program. This initiative, focused on enhancing reading and spelling instruction, was highlighted in a Facebook post dated April 14, 2025.
Lexia LETRS is a professional development program aimed at equipping early childhood and elementary educators with comprehensive knowledge of reading and language instruction. Developed by Dr. Louisa Moats and other literacy experts, the program addresses areas such as phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing. According to Lexia, LETRS is grounded in the science of reading and seeks to fill instructional gaps identified in teacher preparation programs. The course is designed to help educators understand language structure and apply research-based methods in classroom reading instruction.
According to Lexia, the Lexia LETRS program offers three structured learning paths tailored for educators, early childhood professionals, and education leaders. Each path aims to elucidate the processes behind reading acquisition and their application in teaching. The program encompasses training in five essential literacy components alongside spelling, writing, and oral language instruction. LETRS integrates content knowledge with instructional strategies and implementation tools to bolster literacy teaching practices over time through professional learning rooted in contemporary reading science.
