North Dakota Health and Human Services (HHS), alongside Families Flourish ND, parent and family resource centers, and local child welfare providers are emphasizing the significance of community support in preventing child abuse throughout April, recognized as national Child Abuse Prevention Month.

In 2024, North Dakota recorded 467 confirmed cases of child abuse and neglect. This figure marks a decrease from the 580 cases reported in 2023, highlighting an improvement in the prevention efforts within the state.

Cory Pedersen, HHS Children and Family Services director, stated, “This year’s theme, ‘Powered by Hope, Strengthened by Prevention,’ recognizes that when families have the right support, they can build a brighter future for their children.” Pedersen added that the team's dedication helps families find necessary resources and assistance to ensure the safety of children at home.

Throughout April, numerous agencies in North Dakota will host both in-person and virtual events to recognize Child Abuse Prevention Month. Details about upcoming events are available through Families Flourish ND.

April also serves as a reminder of North Dakota's Baby Safe Haven law, which permits parents to surrender a baby up to one year old at approved locations if they are unable to provide care. The law allows for the safe surrender without fear of prosecution, provided the babies are unharmed and handed to an on-duty staff member at a hospital or other designated site.
