The University of Mary recently marked a pivotal occasion with the groundbreaking ceremony for the Marauders Athletics Complex. The event took place on April 11 in Bismarck and was attended by various stakeholders, including students, alumni, faculty, staff, donors, community members, and the Benedictine Sisters of Annunciation Monastery, who serve as the university's founders and sponsors. Sister Nicole Kunze, prioress of Annunciation Monastery, performed the traditional groundbreaking using a symbolic golden shovel. This new project aims to bring sports competitions back to campus, promoting school spirit and enhancing community ties.

Set to commence on April 28, construction is expected to be completed by Fall 2027, aligning with the NCAA Division II season. The complex is part of Phase II of the University of Mary’s Vision 2030 Capital Campaign, totaling $272 million, with $45 million allocated to the athletics complex. Most of the development will occur east of the current fieldhouse on Highway 1804.

University of Mary President Monsignor James Shea expressed gratitude for the achievement, stating, “Today we can confidently say that our patience, perseverance, and the incredible generosity of our benefactors have brought us to this point." Executive Vice President Jerome Richter highlighted the ongoing support from donors, noting their belief in the university's mission and responsible management of resources.

For many years, the university's sports teams have played at various locations around Bismarck. The completion of the Marauders Athletics Complex will enable football, soccer, softball, and track & field teams to have their home games on campus, creating a vibrant sporting environment. Marcus Wagner, director of Intercollegiate Athletics, commented, “This project is about much more than buildings—it’s about elevating the scholar-athlete experience and reinforcing our commitment to Greatness through Virtue.”

Central to the complex, the Research and Performance Center (RPC) will merge academic and athletic functions. The RPC will feature areas for strength and conditioning, sports medicine, and nutrition, and will act as the grandstand for football games. Its function will change during the weekends, providing premium viewing suites. Dr. Mary Dockter, dean of the Saint Gianna School of Health Sciences, highlighted the significance, saying, “This facility embodies our mission, combining academics with athletics in a way that serves both scholars and athletes at the highest level.”

Additionally, the Multipurpose Sports Dome will serve as a venue for soccer and softball, boasting a size of 275 feet by 400 feet and a peak height of 85 feet. Not only does it aim to benefit university athletes, but it will also be available for community use, supporting local youth sports and tournaments. Its design allows year-round use, mitigating challenges from unpredictable weather conditions in North Dakota.
