The City of Mandan has issued a notice to residents in the Lakewood area regarding odors emanating from the Wastewater Treatment Plant. The plant treats all domestic, commercial, and industrial wastewater from Mandan, with treated water discharged into the Missouri River. The byproduct removed from this process is directed to a pond known as the facultative sludge basin.

During winter, ice forms on this pond, halting aerobic treatment due to lack of oxygen. As temperatures rise and spring approaches, this pond can release strong odors as organic treatment processes resume. These odors are often intensified by North Dakota's strong winds.

The city has acknowledged the issue and expressed its commitment to finding solutions. "We apologize in advance for any odors from the plant," stated city staff and leaders in their communication to residents. They further noted that efforts are ongoing to mitigate these smells through collaboration with regulatory officials, engineers, and wastewater vendors.

Residents with questions or concerns are encouraged to contact Wastewater Treatment Plant Superintendent Ryan Malsam at 701-667-3278 or City Engineer Jarek Wigness at 701-667-3225.

Sincerely,

City of Mandan, Wastewater Treatment Team
