The Bismarck Fire Department responded to a fire at a commercial building on the south side of town on Monday night. The incident occurred at approximately 8:42 PM on March 17, 2025, when the department received a call about a structure fire in the 2500 block of Lockheed Drive.
Firefighters arrived at the scene by 8:48 PM and discovered smoke emanating from an open door of the building. Upon entering through this walk-in door, they encountered heavy smoke throughout the premises. The fire crews identified an area on the second floor where the building's sprinkler system had activated and extinguished a fire. Additional teams confirmed that everyone was evacuated safely, conducted overhaul to eliminate any smoldering materials, and vented smoke from the structure.
No injuries were reported among either onsite workers or firefighters. The damage was confined to the room where the fire originated, although there was smoke damage throughout other parts of the building. An investigation determined that the cause of the fire was accidental.
The activation of the building's sprinkler system is credited with automatically putting out the fire and minimizing both damage and potential loss. According to data from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), in buildings equipped with such systems, 97% of fires are contained to their room of origin, potentially reducing damage by up to 90%.
