The State Board of Animal Health (BOAH) in Bismarck, North Dakota, has decided to extend the waiver on the age requirement for brucellosis vaccination in heifers. This decision was made during the board's meeting on March 12. The extension allows the vaccination age to be increased from 12 months to 14 months.
State Veterinarian Dr. Ethan Andress addressed the ongoing challenges faced by veterinary clinics due to a shortage of brucellosis vaccines. "The shortage of brucellosis vaccine continues to be a challenge for many vet clinics," Dr. Andress stated. He also mentioned that further discussions regarding this issue will take place at the next BOAH meeting.
Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring commented on the decision, stating, "After revisiting all available information, the board determined that the extension presents negligible risk to animal health in North Dakota."
The current extension is set to be reviewed again at BOAH's next scheduled meeting on June 11, 2025.
