Senators John Hoeven and Mike Rounds have introduced two legislative proposals aimed at enhancing Second Amendment rights for military families and full-time travelers. The proposed bills, named the Traveler’s Gun Rights Act and the Protect Our Military Families’ 2nd Amendment Rights Act, seek to amend parts of the Gun Control Act of 1968. These amendments would provide exceptions for individuals with unique living arrangements, such as military spouses and those whose permanent addresses are mailboxes or post office boxes.
Senator Hoeven stated, "We introduced these pieces of legislation to help ensure that military families and full-time travelers can exercise their Second Amendment rights without unnecessary obstacles." He emphasized that these measures aim to offer consistent protection both at home and on the move, reinforcing freedoms beneficial to all Americans.
Senator Rounds added his perspective as a hunter and gun owner: "As a hunter, a lawful gun owner and a supporter of the Second Amendment, I am committed to protecting the rights of lawful gun owners." He pointed out that existing laws fail to adequately address the unique living situations faced by many Americans, including military families. The proposed legislation intends to remove barriers preventing law-abiding citizens from exercising their Second Amendment rights.
The Traveler’s Gun Rights Act is cosponsored by Senators John Boozman, Ted Budd, Kevin Cramer, Cindy Hyde-Smith, James Lankford, Roger Marshall, and James Risch. Meanwhile, Senators Ted Budd, Shelley Moore Capito, Kevin Cramer, Cindy Hyde-Smith, Jim Justice, James Risch, and Rick Scott join in cosponsoring the Protect Our Military Families’ 2nd Amendment Rights Act.
