North Dakota Health and Human Services (HHS) is focusing on the dangers of poisonous substances during National Poison Prevention Week, observed from March 16-22. The initiative aims to educate residents about potential risks, preventive measures, and available resources for assistance in case of poisoning incidents.

Residents can contact poison help at 800-222-1222 for both inquiries and emergencies. In 2024, the North Dakota Poison Help Center handled over 5,600 calls, primarily concerning medications such as pain relievers, antidepressants, and sedatives.

By calling poison help (800-222-1222), individuals are connected to medically trained specialists who provide accurate information about poisons and treatments, expert guidance on appropriate actions, and confidential assistance without judgment.

For severe cases where an individual has collapsed, experienced a seizure, or has difficulty breathing or cannot be awakened, HHS advises calling 911 immediately.

Statistics show that around 90% of poisonings occur at home each year. More than 70% of callers receive necessary help on-site, avoiding trips to healthcare facilities. The poison help line offers free support around the clock every day of the year. HHS recommends adding the poison help center number (800-222-1222) to phone contacts and bookmarking the ndpoison.org website for quick access.
