An officer from the Bismarck Police Department, with 11 years of service, has been discharged from the hospital after being intentionally struck by an SUV. The incident involved a 53-year-old woman from Bismarck.

Central Dakota Communications received a report at approximately 12:07 pm about a woman in a white SUV behaving as if intoxicated or under the influence. Two officers, one with 11 years and another with six years of experience, responded to the scene at a parking lot on S 12th St around 12:14 pm. The senior officer engaged with the woman while his colleague spoke to witnesses.

Footage from body-worn cameras showed that during these interactions, the driver attempted to leave despite orders to stop. She swerved towards the senior officer but missed him initially. She then reversed and appeared ready to flee but instead drove towards the officers again, hitting the veteran officer and causing him to be thrown over a snowbank.

In response, officers fired at the vehicle, striking the driver to protect both their colleague and nearby bystanders. Both individuals were treated for injuries on-site before being transported by Metro Ambulance Services to a local hospital. The driver was later pronounced dead.

The injured officer managed to leave the hospital without serious harm.

Both officers involved are currently on administrative leave while an investigation is conducted by the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation. The Bismarck Police Department expressed gratitude for community support and committed to providing updates as more information becomes available.

The identity of the deceased driver remains undisclosed pending notification of next of kin.
