Bismarck will host a Bicycle Friendly Community Workshop on May 21-22, 2025, at Bismarck Public Works, located at 601 S 26th St. The free event is open to local stakeholders interested in improving bicycle infrastructure and accessibility in the community.

The workshop, facilitated by the Bicycle Friendly America program under the League of American Bicyclists, will provide a hands-on assessment of Bismarck’s bicycle infrastructure. A staff member from the League will lead discussions on the Bicycle Friendly Community designation and the steps required to achieve official recognition. The assessment will be conducted through the League’s five-category framework, which examines engineering, education, encouragement, enforcement, and evaluation and planning.

Communities that receive BFC recognition benefit from improved safety for cyclists, potential economic growth through increased bike tourism, and enhanced community health.

Participants will engage in presentations and discussions that explore the strengths and weaknesses of local bicycle infrastructure. The event will include an interactive evaluation of existing conditions, offering specific recommendations for improvements. A key part of the workshop will be a bike ride audit, covering four to six miles, to assess the safety, accessibility, and overall quality of the community’s biking infrastructure. Participants must arrange their own transportation to the ride location, and helmets are strongly encouraged.

The first day of the workshop will run from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and will include an overview of the program, an analysis of Bismarck’s current bicycle infrastructure, and the bike ride audit. Lunch will be provided on the first day. The second day will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and will focus on developing an action plan and identifying next steps to improve bicycling conditions in Bismarck.

The workshop is part of the city’s ongoing efforts to enhance bicycle accessibility and safety. Residents, city officials, and community advocates are encouraged to attend.

More information is available on Bismarck’s official website or through local organizers.
